RAF Top Guns have crashed two Tornado jets in TWO DAYS in a disastrous start to a new Afghanistan mission.
The pilot and navigator of one aircraft ejected at ground level when they were forced to abort their take-off.
They were lucky to escape with cuts and bruises as the 25-year-old Tornado GR4 - laden with bombs and fuel - crashed in a fireball at the end of the Kandahar runway.
The other crew ran for their lives after landing as a brake fault started a fire in their £13million GR4.
The accidents mean 12 Squadron is down to four GR4s.
The planes replaced Harriers in the southern Afghan badlands last month.
Their role is to support ground troops by swooping in to bomb the Taliban.
An RAF source said: "Losing one is bad enough but two so close is a disaster."
Insiders say the Tornado struggles with the heat, dust and 3,000ft altitude.
The crashes happened on July 19 and 20.
A replacement for one jet is being flown from RAF Lossiemouth.
Engineers will see if the other can be fixed.
Air Vice-Marshal Greg Bagwell said: "Crews are operating in extreme conditions which sometimes means incidents happen."
